JIC vs. JIS vs. DIN Hydraulic Fittings

Jan. 15, 2025

INTRODUCTION

In this guide, we will look at these three types of fittings, their uses, benefits, and what makes them different. Whether you are a professional in the hydraulic field or just starting out, this guide will give you helpful information.

WHAT ARE JIC FITTINGS?

Joint Industry Council (JIC) fittings have been a cornerstone of the hydraulic industry since their development in the early 20th century. Originally designed to standardize fittings in the aircraft industry, they addressed the challenges of maintaining and repairing systems with varied fittings. JIC fittings feature a 37-degree flare angle, ensuring a strong, leak-resistant seal between the fitting and hydraulic hose or tubing, even under high pressure.

WHAT ARE JIS FITTINGS?

JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) fitting is a type of hydraulic fitting that is commonly used in Japan and other Asian countries. Like JIC fittings, JIS fittings are used to connect hydraulic hoses and tubes across various applications, such as industrial machinery, construction equipment, and agricultural machinery. JIS fittings feature a 30-degree flare angle, differing slightly from the 37-degree angle of JIC fittings. This design ensures a reliable seal between the fitting and the hydraulic hose or tube, effectively preventing leaks under pressure. Available in a range of sizes—from small diameters for low-pressure systems to larger ones for high-pressure applications—JIS fittings are typically made of steel or brass and come in both male and female configurations.

WHAT ARE DIN FITTINGS?

DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung) fittings are commonly used hydraulic fittings in Europe, featuring a 24-degree cone and metric threads. These fittings securely connect metric tubing to thread connections, maintaining stability even under high pressure or vibration.

A DIN fitting consists of three components: a body, ferrule, and nut. The ferrule’s sharp edges grip the tubing’s outer surface, ensuring a firm and reliable connection. Stainless steel DIN fittings are particularly favored in industries like breweries, wineries, food and beverage production, pharmaceuticals, and chemicals.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN JIC AND JIS HYDRAULIC FITTINGS

JIC (Joint Industry Council) and JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) fittings are distinct types of hydraulic fittings, each tailored for specific applications. Here are the primary differences:

- Flare Angle: The big difference is the flare angle. DIN fittings have a 24-degree flare angle, while JIS fittings have a 30-degree flare angle. This difference changes how these fittings seal and connect to the hydraulic tubing or hose.

- Thread Type: DIN fittings have metric threads, and JIS fittings have BSP threads. This difference means that JIC and JIS fittings often require separate tools or adapters for installation and maintenance.

- Standards: JIC fittings adhere to SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) standards, whereas JIS fittings comply with Japanese Industrial Standards. As a result, their specifications and performance criteria may vary slightly based on these governing frameworks.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN JIS AND DIN HYDRAULIC FITTINGS

JIS and DIN fittings serve similar purposes but differ in key ways:

- Flare Angle: DIN fittings have a 24-degree flare angle, while JIS fittings use a 30-degree flare angle. This affects how they seal and connect to hydraulic tubing or hoses.

- Thread Type: DIN fittings feature metric threads, whereas JIS fittings use BSP threads, requiring different tools and adapters for installation or repair.

- Standards: DIN fittings adhere to German Industry Standards, while JIS fittings follow Japanese Industrial Standards, resulting in slight differences in specifications and performance.
